Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday is a Christian festival celebrated throughout Europe and it falls on the 4th Sunday in Lent.  It is increasingly being called Mother's Day although in countries other than the UK and Ireland that holiday has other origins.  Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family. Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and cards to their mothers.
